Truck Driver Flees After Killing Dispatch Rider in Tanker Crash on Apapa–Oshodi Expressway, LASTMA Secures Scene
A dispatch rider has lost his life in a tragic road crash involving a diesel tanker along the Apapa–Oshodi Expressway in Lagos, as officials of the Lagos State Traffic Management Authority (LASTMA) swiftly secured the accident scene while the truck driver fled.
A dispatch rider was killed on Wednesday after a fully loaded HOWO diesel tanker rammed into his motorcycle under the Cele Bridge corridor of the Apapa–Oshodi Expressway in Lagos.
According to the Lagos State Traffic Management Authority, the fatal crash involved a diesel tanker with registration number RBC 38 XF, which reportedly struck the dispatch rider while in motion, trapping him underneath the heavy-duty vehicle. The victim died instantly at the scene.
LASTMA officials stationed in the area responded promptly to the incident by cordoning off the crash site using traffic cones and cautionary tape to prevent further accidents and ensure the safety of other road users along the busy corridor.
However, the driver of the tanker reportedly fled the scene after realizing the gravity of the incident.
The tanker was subsequently impounded by LASTMA officials, while operatives from the Nigeria Police Force attached to the Ijesha Police Division arrived at the scene to take over the investigation.
Authorities confirmed that the deceased rider, the impounded tanker, and the damaged motorcycle were handed over to the police for further investigation and possible prosecution of those responsible.
The victim’s remains were later recovered from beneath the tanker and transported by police officers to a morgue in Yaba.
Reacting to the incident, the General Manager of LASTMA, Olalekan Bakare-Oki, expressed condolences to the family of the deceased, describing the accident as deeply distressing.
Bakare-Oki also urged the police to conduct a thorough investigation into the circumstances surrounding the crash and ensure that justice is served.
