First Lady Oluremi Tinubu to Champion “Energise Commercialisation” Programme to Boost Nigerian Innovations
The Federal Government has unveiled a newa initiative aimed at transforming Nigeria into a technology-driven economy, with the First Lady, Oluremi Tinubu, set to serve as the national champion of the “Energise Commercialisation” programme designed to support commercially viable inventions across the country.
The Minister of Innovation, Science and Technology, Kingsley Tochukwu Udeh, disclosed this during a visit to the First Lady at the State House in Abuja.
According to the minister, the visit was to formally inform the First Lady of the ministry’s decision to appoint her as the champion of the programme, which is aimed at moving Nigeria from being largely a technology-importing nation to a technology-innovating one.
Udeh explained that the “Energise Commercialisation” programme will focus on identifying and supporting youths and other Nigerians with commercially viable inventions and innovations, helping them transform their ideas into marketable products.
He noted that the initiative will strengthen the capacity of Nigerian innovators, particularly young people, by providing them with the necessary support to scale their inventions.
The minister added that the programme has already begun sensitisation efforts and will be taken across all states of the federation, led by the First Lady as its national champion.
“We will be going to schools at all levels and reaching the nooks and crannies of the states to identify even those who may not have formal education but possess valuable inventions and innovations,” he said.
He emphasised that Nigeria has the intellectual capacity to compete globally in the technology space and must take deliberate steps to harness the innovative potential of its people.
“Nigeria cannot be left out of the world technology revolution,” the minister added.
The closed-door meeting with the First Lady signals the imminent launch of the Energise Commercialisation programme by the Federal Ministry of Innovation, Science and Technology, with youths and women expected to be the primary beneficiaries.
