Organisers of the Lagos Fanti Carnival have announced that the 2026 edition of the historic cultural festival will hold on Easter Monday, April 6, 2026, at Tafawa Balewa Square, with the theme “A Homecoming of Heritage.” The celebration aims to reconnect audiences with the enduring cultural links between West Africa and Brazil while showcasing the rich heritage of Lagos Island communities.
The organisers disclosed that the event will be hosted by the Brazilian Descendants Association in partnership with the Lagos State Ministry of Tourism, Arts and Culture.
According to the organisers, the festival celebrates the enduring cultural ties between West Africa and Brazil while spotlighting historic Lagos Island communities that have preserved the Afro-Brazilian legacy for generations.
The Lagos Fanti Carnival traces its roots to the 19th century when Afro-Brazilian returnees known as the Aguda introduced Brazilian-inspired carnival traditions to Lagos. Over the decades, the celebration has grown into a vibrant cultural showcase reflecting the multicultural identity of the city.
Communities such as Lafiaji, Isale-Eko, Olowogbowo, Campos, Epetedo, Okepopo, and Okoo-Faji have historically played key roles in sustaining the carnival tradition.
For the 2026 edition, organisers said the event will expand into a multi-layered cultural platform featuring a street carnival procession across Lagos Island, a curated heritage exhibition, the Afro-Brazilian Economic Summit, and a grand closing concert with live cultural performances.
The announcement follows the successful revival of the carnival in 2025, which attracted thousands of participants and generated extensive media coverage.
Organisers project that the 2026 edition will draw more than 25,000 attendees, while global livestream audiences are expected to exceed 80,000 viewers.
Speaking ahead of the event, the organisers said the theme “A Homecoming of Heritage” reflects efforts to reconnect contemporary audiences with the shared histories between Africa and Brazil that continue to shape Lagos today.
They described the carnival as more than a festival, noting that it serves as “a living archive of migration, resilience, and cultural exchange.”
According to them, the event will bring together historic carnival associations representing Afro-Brazilian descendant communities across Lagos Island, alongside cultural performers, scholars, policymakers, and international audiences.
By expanding the festival into a city-scale cultural platform, the organisers said the Lagos Fanti Carnival aims to strengthen Lagos’ position as a major destination for heritage tourism while amplifying the global relevance of Afro-Brazilian cultural exchange.
