One Dead, Six Injured as LASTMA Restores Traffic After Fatal Crash on Oworonsoki–Apapa Expressway

A female passenger has lost her life while six others sustained serious injuries in a tragic road accident involving a commercial bus along the Oworonsoki–Apapa Expressway at New Castle Bus Stop, inward Gbagada, Lagos, prompting swift emergency and traffic management operations by the Lagos State Traffic Management Authority (LASTMA).

The accident, which occurred over the weekend, involved a Volkswagen commercial bus with registration number LSD 654 XY that reportedly veered off its lane and rammed violently into a roadside culvert along the busy corridor.

According to preliminary reports, the force of the collision threw a female passenger out of the vehicle onto the expressway. In a tragic twist, an oncoming articulated trailer approaching the scene could not stop in time and ran over the victim, resulting in her immediate death.

Officials of the Lagos State Traffic Management Authority who were monitoring traffic around the Gbagada axis quickly responded by activating emergency traffic control measures to manage the situation and prevent further accidents.

To ensure safety and facilitate rescue operations, LASTMA operatives temporarily cordoned off the expressway while emergency responders evacuated the deceased, the injured passengers, and the wreckage of the commercial bus from the roadway.

Six other occupants of the bus, including the driver, sustained varying degrees of severe injuries, with some suffering multiple fractures. The driver of the articulated trailer reportedly fled the scene shortly after the incident.

Security operatives from the Nigeria Police Force attached to the Pedro Police Division later arrived at the scene to provide security support and assist in maintaining order around the accident site.

Emergency responders from the Lagos State Ambulance Service (LASAMBUS) evacuated the injured victims to a nearby hospital for urgent medical treatment. The bus driver was said to have sustained a fractured leg.

Meanwhile, officials of the Lagos State Environmental Health Monitoring Unit evacuated the remains of the deceased passenger from the scene.

After the rescue and evacuation operations were completed, LASTMA officials cleared the accident debris and restored normal vehicular movement along the expressway.

The General Manager of LASTMA, Olalekan Bakare-Oki, expressed deep condolences to the family of the deceased and wished the injured victims a speedy recovery.

He also reiterated the agency’s commitment to continuous public enlightenment on road safety, urging motorists and commercial transport operators to ensure their vehicles are properly maintained, especially critical components such as braking systems.

According to him, strict adherence to routine vehicle maintenance remains essential in preventing avoidable road traffic accidents and safeguarding lives on the nation’s highways.
