Police Week 2026: Zone 2 Zonal Headquarters Holds Walkathon to Boost Fitness, Strengthen Community Trust
The Zone 2 Zonal Headquarters of the Nigeria Police Force on Tuesday staged a walkathon as part of activities marking Day 2 of Police Week 2026, aimed at promoting officer fitness, deepening public engagement, and reinforcing community trust in policing.
The exercise, held across key areas within Lagos and Ogun States, was led by the Assistant Inspector-General of Police in charge of Zone 2, Moshood Olorundare Jimoh, who described the initiative as a strategic move to bridge the gap between the police and the public.
According to the AIG, the walkathon followed the sanitation exercise conducted on Day 1 of the week-long programme, underscoring the command’s commitment to community-oriented policing.
He explained that Police Week 2026, themed “Community Partnership and Building Trust,” aligns with the directive of the Inspector-General of Police, Olatunji Rilwan Disu, to foster stronger collaboration between law enforcement officers and the communities they serve.
“The essence of this initiative is to physically demonstrate to members of the public that we are part of them. We want to reassure Nigerians that the police are approachable, reachable, and committed to ensuring the safety and security of all,” Jimoh said.
He emphasized that effective policing cannot be achieved in isolation, noting that the cooperation and involvement of the public remain critical to maintaining law and order.
“We cannot police an empty space. We police the people, and there is a need to carry them along in everything we do. This programme is designed to show that our operations are not shrouded in secrecy but are people-centered,” he added.
The AIG further noted that the walkathon covered several kilometres, symbolizing the dedication and physical readiness of officers, while also creating an opportunity for informal interaction with residents.
He expressed appreciation to the IGP for introducing the initiative, describing it as impactful for both officers and the general public.
“This will have a significant impact. It helps officers understand the importance of community collaboration, while also assuring the public that they can engage with the police beyond formal complaints or official invitations,” Jimoh stated.
Police Week is an annual event designed to highlight the role of the Nigeria Police Force in national development, while promoting accountability, transparency, and stronger community relations.
