Sanwo-Olu Police Care Initiative Provides Health Checks, Free Eye Tests and Glasses to Officers at Zone 2 Command
Police officers at the Zone 2 Police Command in Lagos have benefited from comprehensive health checks, including free eye examinations and the distribution of corrective glasses, as the Sanwo-Olu Police Care Initiative continues its outreach to improve the welfare and well-being of security personnel.
The Sanwo-Olu Police Care Initiative has extended its health outreach to officers serving at the Zone 2 Police Command in Lagos, offering medical screenings, free eye tests, and the dispensing of reading glasses to personnel.
The initiative, championed by the Senior Special Assistant to the Governor on Transportation Logistics, Hon. Adekoya Hassan, is aimed at ensuring that police officers remain physically fit and healthy to effectively carry out their duties of safeguarding lives and property.
Medical professionals involved in the programme conducted various health checks, including blood pressure tests, consultations, and eye examinations for officers at the command.
Speaking during the exercise, Dr. Helen Atinuke, a United Kingdom-based family physician and lifestyle health expert, described the programme as a commendable initiative that prioritises the welfare of officers who play a critical role in maintaining security.
Dr. Helen, who practices at Mexborough Integrated Health Care Centre in Doncaster, United Kingdom, said she joined the programme after learning about it online and reaching out to the organisers to offer her support.
She praised the Lagos State Government for partnering with the police to address health concerns within the force, noting that investing in the health of officers would ultimately strengthen community safety.
According to her, interactions with officers during the exercise revealed the need for greater health awareness and improved health-seeking behaviour.
“One of the major challenges we discovered is that many people are not compliant with their medications even after diagnosis. Programmes like this help to educate them and encourage them to take their health more seriously,” she said.
She also urged officers to make use of available medical services, including clinics within their commands, stressing that preventive care and early diagnosis are key to maintaining good health.
One of the beneficiaries, Inspector Ogundare Olusola of the Zone 2 Police Command, expressed appreciation to the organisers, describing the initiative as timely and beneficial.
He explained that the medical personnel conducted detailed consultations and recommended further medical tests for some officers, while others received corrective glasses after undergoing eye examinations.
“The personnel they brought are doing very well. Some of the questions they asked addressed issues many of us are facing. After the eye tests, many of us were given reading glasses, and some officers were advised to go for further tests outside,” he said.
Also speaking, the Deputy Commissioner of Police in charge of Administration at Zone 2 Police Command, DCP Adamu Muhammed Bello, commended the Lagos State Government for initiating the health programme, noting that it would go a long way in supporting the well-being of officers.
According to him, many officers had long looked forward to such an opportunity to access medical screening and professional health advice within their workplace.
DCP Bello also extended appreciation to the Inspector General of Police, Olatunji Rilwan Disu, and the Deputy Inspector General of Police in charge of Zone 2, DIG Adegoke Fayoade, for allowing the Lagos State Government to carry out the medical outreach for officers at the command.
He noted that the exercise had provided officers with a valuable opportunity to check their health status and receive professional medical guidance.
The outreach forms part of ongoing efforts under the Sanwo-Olu Police Care Initiative to promote preventive healthcare, improve officers’ well-being, and enhance their capacity to serve the public effectively.
