The General Counsel of Moniepoint, Okechukwu Eke, has been recognised in the GC Powerlist: Nigeria 2026 by Legal 500, marking his second appearance on the prestigious list after his first recognition in the inaugural 2024 edition.

The GC Powerlist celebrates the most influential and innovative in-house counsel shaping the legal and commercial direction of leading organisations across Nigeria. Now in its third year, the 2026 edition highlights legal professionals navigating complex regulatory environments, driving technological transformation and supporting strategic business growth within their companies.

According to Legal 500, the annual selection process involves nominations from law firm partners and in-house lawyers who identify legal professionals that have played pivotal roles in advancing their organisations. Honourees are recognised for shaping commercial decisions, providing technical solutions to complex legal challenges, developing innovative legal structures and building operational models that support business growth.

Speaking on the significance of the recognition, Global Business Development Manager at Legal 500, David Freeman, highlighted the growing strategic importance of in-house counsel. He noted that general counsel are increasingly playing critical roles in corporate governance, regulatory engagement and business transformation.

Eke’s return to the Powerlist reflects continued achievements within the legal department of Moniepoint since he joined the company in 2022. Under his leadership, the firm’s legal team has delivered proactive and commercially aligned legal support across the company’s banking, payments, credit and remittance operations.

He has also overseen multi-jurisdictional due diligence processes, documentation reviews and governance approvals across Nigeria, the United States and the United Kingdom, enabling transactions that have supported the company’s expansion and product innovation. The legal team has further developed standardised agreements across Moniepoint’s product and service lines, contributing to the company’s position as one of Africa’s fastest-growing fintech firms.

Reacting to the recognition, Eke said the honour reflects the strength and commitment of the entire Moniepoint legal team.

Our role has grown substantially from structuring complex cross-border transactions to embedding the legal function deeply into the company’s commercial and product operations.
