Lagos APC Dismisses Alleged Imposition Plot, Reaffirms Commitment to Internal Democracy Ahead of Elections
LAGOS, Nigeria — The Lagos State Chapter of the All Progressives Congress (APC) has dismissed reports alleging a plan to impose candidates ahead of the forthcoming legislative elections, describing the claims as false, malicious, and intended to stir internal division within the party.
In a strongly worded statement issued on Wednesday, the party said the publication, attributed to an anonymous group describing itself as “concerned and vigilant members,” was a fabricated attempt to create a sense of crisis where none exists.
The APC maintained that there is no clandestine arrangement, no secret meetings, and no predetermined list of candidates as alleged in the report, stressing that such claims were designed to mislead the public and undermine confidence in its internal processes.
According to the party, individuals behind the publication are allegedly acting out of frustration over their inability to advance personal political ambitions through legitimate party structures, and have resorted to propaganda and media sensationalism.
The Lagos APC further warned against continued circulation of what it termed “false narratives,” noting that relevant security agencies, the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC), and other democratic stakeholders have been alerted to the activities of those it described as political mischief-makers seeking to destabilize the polity.
Reaffirming its commitment to due process, the party stated that all candidate selection processes will strictly comply with the Electoral Act (as amended), the APC constitution, and guidelines issued by the national leadership.
It reiterated that where consensus cannot be achieved through consultation, direct primaries would be conducted, insisting that the process remains lawful, transparent, and non-negotiable.
The statement emphasized that the Lagos APC remains committed to internal democracy, inclusiveness, and respect for party members’ voices, adding that the collective will of registered members will ultimately determine candidate emergence.
The party urged members of the public and stakeholders to disregard what it called “faceless groups and opportunistic actors,” assuring that its democratic structures remain intact and functional.
