How Lagos Detectives Tracked Car Snatchers Through Vehicle Re-Registration Scheme

What began as the theft of a Toyota Camry in Lagos has exposed a sophisticated interstate vehicle-snatching network stretching into Oyo and Kwara states, leading to the arrest of suspected syndicate members and the recovery of five stolen vehicles.

Operatives of the Lagos State Police Command uncovered the criminal network after launching an intelligence-driven investigation into the theft of a Toyota Camry 2008 model. The breakthrough came when detectives tracked the stolen vehicle to a re-registration point, a discovery that eventually unraveled the operations of the suspected car theft syndicate.

According to the Command, investigations revealed that the syndicate allegedly specialized in stealing vehicles within Lagos before moving them to Ibadan in Oyo State and Ilorin in Kwara State, where the cars were concealed and sold to unsuspecting buyers.

The police operation first led to the arrest of Segun Olawuwo, 58, in Ibadan, where officers recovered another suspected stolen Toyota Corolla 2008 model from his possession.

Further intelligence gathering and interrogation of the suspect reportedly exposed more members of the network, leading operatives to Ilorin, Kwara State, where two other suspects, Femi Afolabi, 53, and Sunday Ugbomudia, 53, were arrested.

During the operation, police recovered a Toyota Camry 2008 model and a Toyota Corolla 2006 model believed to have been stolen. Investigators also traced another Toyota Camry 2012 model that had earlier been sold to an unsuspecting buyer in Ibadan.

Police said preliminary findings indicate that the suspects were involved in several car-snatching and robbery operations both within Lagos and in other parts of the country.

The Lagos State Police Command added that efforts are ongoing to apprehend other fleeing members of the syndicate and recover more vehicles linked to the criminal network.

Commending the operatives for the successful operation, the Commissioner of Police, Lagos State Command, CP Tijani Fatai, praised the officers for their professionalism, resilience, and dedication in combating criminal activities across the state.

He also urged residents to remain vigilant and support security agencies with credible information that could aid crime-fighting efforts across Lagos State.
