Nigerian Navy Marks 70th Anniversary with Grand Celebration at Western Naval Command

The Nigerian Navy has celebrated its 70th anniversary with a colourful ceremony at the Western Naval Command, held at the Navy Beecroft Parade Ground in Apapa, Lagos.

The event, hosted by the Flag Officer Commanding Western Naval Command, Rear Admiral Abubakar Abdullahi Mustapha, brought together senior military officers, dignitaries, security chiefs, members of sister agencies, partners, and members of the media to commemorate seven decades of naval service to the nation.

Speaking during the ceremony, Rear Admiral Mustapha described the anniversary celebration as an opportunity not only for relaxation and social interaction among personnel and guests, but also for reflection on the Nigerian Navy’s journey over the past 70 years.

He noted that the Nigerian Navy has evolved into a formidable maritime force dedicated to defending Nigeria’s territorial integrity, safeguarding maritime resources, and contributing to regional and global maritime security.

The naval chief paid tribute to the founding fathers of the service as well as past and present officers, ratings, and civilian personnel whose sacrifices and commitment have shaped the growth and achievements of the Navy over the decades.

According to him, the Western Naval Command remains committed to supporting the strategic directives of the Chief of the Naval Staff, Vice Admiral Idi Abbas through enhanced operational readiness and effective maritime security operations across the nation’s waterways.

He also appreciated personnel of the Armed Forces, other security agencies, and strategic partners for their collective efforts in sustaining peace, security, and stability within Nigeria’s maritime environment.

Rear Admiral Mustapha stressed the importance of strengthening camaraderie, friendship, unity, professionalism, patriotism, and selfless service among members of the armed forces and stakeholders.

The anniversary celebration featured several side attractions, including cultural dance performances and choreographic displays by students of the Nigerian Navy Secondary School, which added colour and excitement to the occasion.

Guests were also entertained with music and other social activities as the Navy celebrated its milestone anniversary and reflected on its contributions to national development and maritime security.

The event ended on a celebratory note, with attendees encouraged to look forward to greater achievements for the Nigerian Navy in the years ahead.
