Igbogbo/Bayeku LCDA Set for HOA Street Soccer Showdown 2026, Organisers Promise Unity, Talent Discovery
The Igbogbo/Bayeku Local Council Development Area (LCDA) has intensified preparations for the maiden edition of the HOA Street Soccer Showdown 2026, with organisers describing the initiative as a strategic platform to promote youth unity, grassroots sports development, and talent discovery within the community.
The organisers made this known during a press conference and team draw ceremony held at the Igbogbo/Bayeku LCDA Hall ahead of the much-anticipated tournament scheduled to take place from May 24 to May 26, 2026, at Olayinka Street, Igbogbo.
Addressing journalists, footballers, community leaders, and sports enthusiasts at the event, the Supervisor for Youth and Sports in the LCDA, Hon. Oke Toyib, expressed appreciation to stakeholders and participants for their support toward the success of the competition.
He noted that the tournament was conceived to strengthen unity among young people through sportsmanship while also creating an atmosphere of healthy competition, entertainment, and community engagement.
According to him, the competition, initiated by Mr. Seyefumi Ogunsola, is the first street soccer tournament of its kind in the area and is designed to bring together youths from different parts of the community in a peaceful and engaging environment.
Hon. Toyib explained that the decision to stage the games overnight was inspired by the excitement and energy associated with major football events globally, adding that the organisers wanted residents to enjoy a unique football experience.
“The essence of this tournament is beyond football. It is about bringing our youths together, creating friendships, encouraging teamwork, and giving young talents the opportunity to showcase themselves,” he said.
The tournament will feature 32 teams competing in a knockout format, with 16 matches scheduled for the opening day before progressing to the round of 16, quarterfinals, semifinals, and final within the three-day event.
Organisers also outlined the rules guiding the competition, stating that each game would last 10 minutes, with a three-minute break after the first half. Substitutions, they explained, can be made without the referee’s involvement, while strict disciplinary measures, including red cards for rule violations, would be enforced to ensure fair play and discipline.
Speaking further, Hon. Toyib assured residents and participants of adequate security throughout the tournament. He disclosed that local security operatives, vigilante groups, the Joint Task Force (JTF), and officers of the Nigeria Police Force had all been mobilised to maintain peace and order during the event.
He added that beyond entertainment, the competition is expected to foster youth cohesion, support community development, and open doors for talented players who may attract the attention of football scouts and professional clubs.
The organisers also announced prizes for the first, second, and third-place winners, alongside consolation prizes for other participating teams as part of efforts to encourage participation and reward excellence.
A major highlight of the press conference was the official unveiling of the tournament trophy, which attracted excitement among participants and football fans. Players and attendees were also given the opportunity to pose with and carry the trophy in anticipation of the competition.
The organisers expressed optimism that the HOA Street Soccer Showdown 2026 would evolve into a major annual grassroots sporting event capable of uniting residents and showcasing the rich football talents within Igbogbo/Bayeku LCDA and beyond.
