Lagos Unveils Major Transport Milestones, Expands Rail, Water and Smart Mobility Projects

The Lagos State Government has highlighted major achievements recorded in the transportation sector as part of activities marking the third year of Governor Babajide Olusola Sanwo-Olu’s second term in office, reaffirming its commitment to building an integrated, efficient and sustainable multimodal transport system across the state.

Speaking during the 2026 Ministerial Press Briefing held on Monday, the Commissioner for Transportation, Oluwaseun Osiyemi, said the administration has intensified reforms and infrastructure development in road, rail and water transportation in line with the THEMES+ Agenda.

Osiyemi stated that the Ministry of Transportation and its agencies have focused on reducing traffic congestion, improving mobility, enhancing safety and promoting cleaner transport alternatives through strategic projects and technology-driven initiatives.

According to him, major traffic management interventions are nearing completion along Toyin Street, Opebi Road and Allen Avenue, with projects involving road expansion, roundabout modification, lane segregation and intelligent traffic signalisation to improve traffic flow around the Opebi-Mende Link Bridge corridor.

The commissioner disclosed that intelligent traffic signal lights have been installed at several strategic locations including Awolowo Way/Kudirat Abiola in Ikeja, Admiralty Road in Lekki, Alfred Rewane Road in Ikoyi, Bode Thomas in Surulere and Araga-Poka Junction in Epe.

He added that the Lagos State Traffic Management Authority (LASTMA) carried out enforcement operations across key congestion corridors such as Idumota-Ebute Ero, Oyingbo-Costain, Lekki-Ajah, Oshodi, CMS-Marina and Apapa-Wharf to restore traffic order and improve road usage.

Osiyemi revealed that over 737,000 traffic violations were captured through Automated Number Plate Recognition cameras, while more than 1.1 million roadworthiness certificates were issued within the review period.

On parking management, the Lagos State Parking Authority identified over 24,000 setback parking slots and introduced electronic parking permits, QR-code verification systems and Automatic Number Plate Recognition technology to improve compliance and reduce indiscriminate parking.

The commissioner also highlighted progress in public transportation infrastructure, noting that the Bus Rapid Transit infrastructure from Doyin-Orile to Mile 2 along the Lagos-Badagry Expressway has reached 84 per cent completion, while the Iyana Ipaja Bus Terminal is currently at 28 per cent completion.

In the rail sector, he said the Blue Line Rail project continues to expand with ongoing Phase II construction from Mile 2 to Okokomaiko. He added that the state recently procured additional train coaches to boost passenger capacity and reduce waiting time on both the Blue and Red rail lines.

According to him, the Red Line rail corridor from Agbado to Oyingbo has also received additional train sets, while feasibility studies for its extension to the National Theatre are ongoing.

Osiyemi further disclosed that the Lagos Green Line Rail project, expected to connect Marina to Lekki Free Trade Zone through Victoria Island, Ajah and Sangotedo, has secured a Memorandum of Understanding with China Harbour Engineering Company.

On water transportation, the commissioner said the state recorded increasing passenger traffic on inland waterways, with about two million commuters now using water transport monthly.

He noted that the OMI-EKO project, launched in 2025, would deliver electric-powered ferries, upgraded ferry terminals, dredged waterways and integrated transport systems aimed at promoting cleaner and safer waterways transportation.

The Lagos Ferry Services (LAGFERRY), he added, has expanded operations with new routes linking Ijede, Ibeshe and Ito-Omu to Lagos Island and Victoria Island, while seven ferries were retrofitted to modern safety and operational standards.

Osiyemi also stressed the government’s push towards environmental sustainability through cleaner transportation initiatives, including electric buses, compressed natural gas (CNG) buses and plans for bio-methane fuel production.

He disclosed that two electric buses deployed on BRT corridors transported over 150,000 passengers during a 90-day pilot phase while avoiding more than 200,000 kilogrammes of emissions.

The commissioner said the state also launched the deployment of 2,000 CNG trucks under a public-private partnership arrangement aimed at improving freight transportation and reducing accidents caused by ageing trucks.

On road safety and driver education, Osiyemi stated that over 45,000 driver trainings were conducted by the Lagos State Drivers’ Institute between 2025 and 2026, while additional programmes targeted dispatch riders, electric mobility drivers and commercial transport operators.

He reaffirmed the state government’s commitment to delivering a seamless, safe, affordable and inclusive transportation system for Lagos residents through sustained investment, policy reforms and stakeholder engagement.
