LASTMA Arrests Truck Driver After Fatal Accident Claims Two Lives on Badagry Expressway

The Lagos State Traffic Management Authority has apprehended the driver of a heavily-loaded bucket truck following a tragic accident that claimed the lives of a pedestrian and a motorcyclist along the Badagry Expressway in Lagos.

The fatal incident occurred over the weekend around the Iyana-Iba Flyover inward the main gate of Lagos State University on the main carriageway of the expressway.

According to preliminary findings, the truck driver was reportedly speeding from the Volkswagen area toward Badagry when he struck and killed an unsuspecting pedestrian. Eyewitness accounts indicated that instead of stopping after the initial collision, the driver allegedly continued driving along the corridor.

In an attempt to stop the fleeing truck, a motorcyclist, accompanied by another individual, pursued the vehicle. However, the truck driver allegedly rammed into the motorcycle during the chase, killing the motorcyclist instantly, while the second rider escaped unhurt.

Officials of LASTMA’s Night Gang Surveillance and Monitoring Patrol Team, who were on routine overnight traffic monitoring and emergency response duties along the Badagry Expressway, swiftly arrived at the scene and evacuated the deceased motorcyclist whose body was trapped beneath the truck’s front tyre.

The truck driver was immediately arrested by LASTMA operatives and handed over to security personnel at the PPL Police Post, Okokomaiko, alongside officials of the Federal Road Safety Corps for further investigation and legal action.

Authorities confirmed that the remains of the motorcyclist were evacuated by FRSC officials, while the body of the pedestrian was released to family members who arrived at the scene after being informed of the incident.

Both the truck and the damaged motorcycle were subsequently towed to the PPL Police Post, Okokomaiko, pending the conclusion of investigations.

Reacting to the incident, LASTMA General Manager, Olalekan Bakare-Oki, expressed condolences to the families of the deceased victims, describing the tragedy as a painful reminder of the dangers associated with reckless driving by articulated vehicle operators.

He urged truck drivers and other motorists to obey speed limits and traffic safety regulations at all times to prevent avoidable loss of lives on Lagos roads.

Bakare-Oki also reiterated LASTMA’s commitment to strengthening traffic enforcement, surveillance, emergency rescue operations, and collaboration with other security and safety agencies to improve road safety across the state.
