 Oyo Govt Launches Daily Environmental Sanitation Monitoring System to Strengthen Cleanliness Drive

The Oyo State Government has introduced a new daily environmental sanitation monitoring and enforcement system aimed at improving cleanliness and promoting a healthier environment across the state.

The initiative was announced by the Commissioner for Environment and Natural Resources, Hon. Ademola Aderinto, during a press briefing held at the Ministry’s conference room in commemoration of his first 100 days in office.

According to him, the state has moved away from the traditional monthly sanitation exercise to a more proactive daily enforcement approach, where environmental health officers are deployed continuously to monitor compliance across communities.

“We are now enforcing daily environmental sanitation. Our officers are on the field every day to ensure compliance—cleanliness must become a daily responsibility,” he stated.

To support the new framework, the Commissioner disclosed that the government has re-engaged 930 Environmental Vanguards, sweepers, and waste packers, alongside the procurement of two new compactor trucks with the backing of Governor Seyi Makinde to improve waste evacuation.

He added that the sanitation workforce has been restructured to enhance coverage and efficiency, while sweepers now operate twice daily to ensure cleaner roads across the state. The workers, he noted, are also enrolled under the Oyo State Health Insurance Scheme.

The Ministry has also launched the “Oyo Soro Soke (Oyo SSS)” Environmental Whistleblower platform, accessible via mobile applications and WhatsApp, to enable residents report environmental violations and encourage public participation in sanitation enforcement.

Other initiatives highlighted include the introduction of a waste segregation system in government offices and the promotion of public-private partnerships for the construction of modern public toilets.

Hon. Aderinto commended the support of the Governor and members of the State Executive Council, as well as the Permanent Secretary, Dr. Sunday Ojelabi, for their cooperation in implementing environmental reforms.

He further noted increased media engagement, improved public awareness campaigns on flooding, heat waves, cholera, and Lassa fever, as well as intensified efforts to regulate charcoal production and eliminate open defecation.

The Commissioner reaffirmed the Ministry’s commitment to sustaining the reforms, describing the first 100 days as a foundation for greater environmental transformation in the state.

“The future of our environment in Oyo State is bright. What we have achieved in 100 days is only the beginning,” he said.
