Tegbe At The Senate, Setting The Record Straight

Nigeria’s Minister-designate for Power, Joseph Olasunkanmi Tegbe, has denied reports claiming he promised to fix the country’s troubled power grid within three months.

In a statement issued by his spokesperson, Adeola A. Adelabu, the minister-designate described the reports as inaccurate and a misrepresentation of his remarks during his Senate screening on May 6, 2026.

According to the statement, Tegbe never made a commitment to completely resolve Nigeria’s electricity challenges within a three-month period. Rather, he explained that timelines for reforms and interventions are still being determined through technical diagnostics and consultations with critical stakeholders in the power sector.

The statement clarified that while initial efforts aimed at stabilizing the national grid would begin within his first 100 days in office, broader structural reforms involving sector credibility, gas supply, metering, and infrastructure modernization could take up to one year.

“My promise to this chamber and to Nigeria is that Nigerians will see visible improvement in the sector,” Tegbe was quoted as saying during the screening.

He also pledged to strengthen the national grid, modernize electricity infrastructure, improve commercial frameworks, and enforce accountability across the electricity value chain.

On tariff reforms, the minister-designate assured Nigerians that vulnerable households would be protected while government pursues sustainability, improved sector efficiency, and investor confidence.

The statement further noted that Tegbe remains open to constructive engagement with the media and encouraged journalists to seek clarification when necessary in order to promote accurate public understanding of ongoing reforms in the power sector.

It added that the minister-designate remains committed to transparency, disciplined execution, and measurable progress in tackling Nigeria’s long-standing electricity challenges.
