Dangote Petroleum Refinery & Petrochemicals has achieved a significant operational milestone by increasing its crude oil processing capacity to 700,000 barrels per day (bpd), exceeding its nameplate capacity of 650,000 bpd. The development reinforces the refinery's status as the world's largest single-train petroleum refinery and strengthens Nigeria's position in the global energy market.

Dangote Petroleum Refinery & Petrochemicals has successfully increased its crude oil processing capacity to 700,000 barrels per day (bpd), surpassing its installed nameplate capacity of 650,000 bpd following a performance test conducted by the refinery's process licensors.

The achievement marks a major milestone in the refinery's operational growth and further consolidates its position as the world's largest single-train petroleum refinery. Industry observers say the development demonstrates the facility's robust engineering design, operational efficiency and ability to optimize production beyond initial projections.

Vice President, Oil and Gas, Dangote Industries Limited, Devakumar Edwin, disclosed that the refinery's latest performance is part of a broader expansion strategy aimed at increasing capacity to 1.4 million bpd within the next 30 months.

According to Edwin, the planned expansion will significantly enhance Nigeria's energy security, eliminate dependence on imported refined petroleum products and strengthen the country's position as a key regional and global refining hub.

"The refinery's growth trajectory reflects our commitment not only to meeting domestic demand but also to establishing Africa as a major force in global refining," he said.

Owned by renowned Nigerian industrialist and philanthropist Aliko Dangote, the refinery commenced fuel production in 2024 and has steadily expanded output of premium motor spirit (PMS), diesel, aviation fuel and other petroleum products.

Over the past two years, the facility has emerged as a major supplier to both local and international markets, exporting refined products to several African countries as well as key European destinations, including the United Kingdom, France, Spain, Italy and the Netherlands. The refinery has also supplied gasoline to the United States market and jet fuel to Saudi Arabia.

The refinery's growing influence has become increasingly important amid global energy supply disruptions linked to tensions in the Middle East. Several African nations have turned to Dangote Refinery as a reliable source of refined petroleum products, enhancing regional energy security.

In another indication of its rising global profile, Dangote Petroleum Refinery was reported by S&P Global Commodities to have become the world's largest exporter of jet fuel in April.

Industry analysts note that the refinery has played a critical role in stabilizing fuel supply in Nigeria, reducing reliance on imports and easing pressure on the country's foreign exchange reserves. The facility also aligns with national efforts to maximize value from Nigeria's vast crude oil resources through local refining.

The increase in production capacity has attracted growing interest from international crude suppliers and commodity trading firms, with the refinery sourcing feedstock from both domestic and foreign producers to sustain its expanding operations.

Looking ahead, Aliko Dangote has expressed confidence that the refinery can become the world's largest refining complex by 2028 through the planned expansion to 1.4 million bpd. The project is expected to generate significant economic benefits, including job creation, increased industrial activity and improved trade balances.

Beyond fuel production, the refinery is also expected to boost downstream manufacturing through a steady supply of liquefied petroleum gas (LPG), polypropylene and other industrial feedstocks used in packaging, consumer goods and manufacturing sectors. Future plans also include the production of Linear Alkylbenzene (LAB), a key raw material used in detergent manufacturing.

With its latest operational milestone, Dangote Refinery continues to reshape Africa's energy landscape while positioning Nigeria as a leading player in the global refining industry.
