Ibeju-Lekki stakeholders, security agencies meet to strengthen peace, tackle rumours of insecurity

The Executive Chairman of Ibeju-Lekki Local Government, Hon. Abdullahi Sesan Olowa, has convened a high-level peace and security meeting with key stakeholders to reinforce safety measures and sustain peace across the council area.

The meeting brought together traditional rulers, members of the Association of Hotel Owners, Community Development Associations (CDAs), school proprietors, and residents, alongside representatives of major security agencies, including the Nigerian Army, Nigerian Police Force, Department of State Services (DSS), Nigeria Security and Civil Defence Corps (NSCDC), and the Lagos Neighbourhood Safety Corps (LNSC).

Addressing participants, Olowa commended stakeholders for their commitment to the development and security of Ibeju-Lekki, while urging residents to remain vigilant in the face of reports about unfamiliar individuals in some communities.

He advised residents against taking the law into their own hands, stressing the need to promptly report suspicious activities to relevant security agencies.

“We must all be security conscious. If you see something suspicious, please do not take the law into your own hands. Report immediately to the nearest security agency,” he said.

The council chairman also urged hotel operators within the local government to maintain accurate records and proper registration of guests to support security monitoring and profiling efforts.

Speaking at the meeting, the Onibeju of Ibeju and Paramount Ruler of Ibeju-Agbe, Oba Waliu Olasunkanmi Oguntolu, called on residents to pay closer attention to new entrants into their communities and cooperate with security agencies.

The monarch praised security operatives for their efforts in maintaining peace and encouraged them to remain steadfast in ensuring law and order throughout the area.

Also speaking, Lt. Col. Samson Enye assured residents that security personnel were working tirelessly to protect lives and property.

According to him, security agencies remain committed to safeguarding communities but require the support of residents through timely information sharing and responsible use of social media.

“We are not resting on our oars. Our men work day and night to ensure the safety of residents. However, we appeal to the public to be cautious in the use of social media so as not to spread unverified information that can cause panic,” he stated.

Representatives of other security agencies at the meeting also reaffirmed their commitment to strengthening collaboration and intelligence sharing to address security concerns in the local government.

The meeting ended with a collective commitment by stakeholders and security agencies to sustain the prevailing peace and security in Ibeju-Lekki and ensure the continued safety of residents and businesses.
