 IGP Disu Orders Proactive Policing as Nigeria Police Record Major Arrests, Rescue 88 Kidnap Victims

The Inspector-General of Police (IGP), Olatunji Rilwan Disu, has directed senior officers of the Nigeria Police Force to intensify proactive and intelligence-led policing strategies to tackle the country's evolving security challenges, while revealing significant operational achievements recorded nationwide in recent weeks.

The Inspector-General of Police (IGP), Olatunji Rilwan Disu, has charged senior officers of the Nigeria Police Force (NPF) to remain proactive, intelligence-driven, and adaptable in addressing the country's complex and evolving security threats.

The directive was issued during the monthly conference of strategic senior officers of the Force held at the Goodluck Ebele Jonathan Peacekeeping Centre, Force Headquarters, Abuja, on Tuesday. The meeting brought together Deputy Inspectors-General of Police, Assistant Inspectors-General of Police, Commissioners of Police, and other senior officers to review the national security landscape and evaluate ongoing policing strategies.

Speaking at the conference, the IGP noted that Nigeria continues to grapple with diverse security challenges, including kidnapping, armed robbery, cult-related violence, terrorism, banditry, farmer-herder clashes, and cyber-enabled crimes. He stressed the need for stronger leadership, enhanced coordination, and effective operational responses to ensure the Force stays ahead of emerging criminal activities.

Disu disclosed that since the last conference held in May 2026, the Police Force has recorded notable operational successes across the country. According to him, operatives arrested eight suspected terrorists, 55 kidnapping suspects, 65 armed robbery suspects, 29 murder suspects, and 42 suspected cultists.

He further revealed that police operations led to the rescue of 88 kidnapped victims, while 114 firearms, 843 rounds of ammunition, and 28 stolen vehicles were recovered from criminal elements.

The IGP also directed Commissioners of Police nationwide to strengthen intelligence gathering, deepen community policing initiatives, and institutionalize regular stakeholder engagements with traditional rulers, religious leaders, youth groups, market associations, transport unions, and other critical community stakeholders.

He emphasized that public trust and community partnership remain vital components of effective policing and crime prevention, noting that security agencies must work closely with citizens to achieve lasting results.

Reaffirming the Force's commitment to professionalism and accountability, Disu urged senior officers to lead by example, uphold discipline within their commands, prioritize personnel welfare, and ensure strict adherence to established operational procedures.

The police chief also highlighted the importance of effective media engagement, stressing that timely and accurate communication is essential to enhancing public understanding of policing activities and combating misinformation.

He reiterated the Nigeria Police Force's commitment to intelligence-led policing, strategic leadership, community partnership, and the protection of lives and property as part of ongoing efforts to strengthen internal security and public safety across the country.
