IGP Disu Seeks Stronger Collaboration With Traditional Rulers, Reassures Officers on Police Reforms in Jigawa
The Inspector-General of Police (IGP), IGP Olatunji Rilwan Disu, has called for stronger collaboration between traditional institutions, security agencies, and local communities as part of efforts to enhance peace, security, and national development across Nigeria.
The IGP made the call during a working visit to Jigawa State on Monday, where he paid a courtesy visit to Governor Umar Namadi, participated in the 8th Executive Committee Meeting of the Northern Traditional Rulers' Council (NTRC) in Dutse, and addressed officers and men of the Jigawa State Police Command.
Speaking at the meeting of the Northern Traditional Rulers' Council, chaired by the Sultan of Sokoto, Alhaji Muhammad Sa'ad Abubakar, the Inspector-General commended traditional rulers for their continued contributions to promoting dialogue, peaceful coexistence, and national unity.
According to him, traditional institutions remain critical partners in intelligence gathering, conflict resolution, community engagement, and early warning systems, stressing that sustained cooperation between traditional rulers and security agencies is essential to tackling insecurity and fostering development across Northern Nigeria.
During his meeting with Governor Umar Namadi, the IGP reaffirmed the commitment of the Nigeria Police Force to strengthening collaboration with the Jigawa State Government and other stakeholders in advancing public safety and community-based policing initiatives.
Addressing officers and men of the Jigawa State Police Command, IGP Disu expressed appreciation for their dedication and professionalism in maintaining peace and security within the state. He assured personnel that the Force leadership remains committed to enhancing operational capacity, improving welfare packages, promoting career development, and boosting service delivery across the Force.
The Inspector-General also addressed concerns surrounding discussions on the proposed establishment of State Police, assuring officers that the ongoing reforms are not designed to jeopardize their careers or benefits.
He explained that the proposed reform aims to strengthen Nigeria's policing architecture while retaining a robust national police institution capable of addressing interstate and national security challenges.
IGP Disu further assured officers that their welfare, pensions, career progression, and other legitimate entitlements would be adequately protected throughout any transition process.
He urged personnel to remain professional, disciplined, and committed to their constitutional responsibilities, emphasizing that the Force would continue to maintain a zero-tolerance policy against corruption, extortion, abuse of office, and other forms of misconduct.
The police chief also encouraged officers to deepen community engagement, embrace intelligence-led policing strategies, and uphold the highest standards of integrity and respect for human rights.
The visit underscored the Nigeria Police Force's commitment to strengthening public trust, improving operational effectiveness, and fostering strategic partnerships with governments, traditional institutions, communities, and other stakeholders in the collective pursuit of peace, security, and national development.
