Motorist Flees Scene After Knocking Down Woman on Lekki-Epe Expressway

LAGOS, Nigeria – The Lagos State Traffic Management Authority (LASTMA) has rescued a female victim who sustained severe injuries, including fractures to her arm and leg, after being knocked down by a hit-and-run driver along the Lekki-Epe Expressway in Lagos.

The incident occurred on Friday at EFF Bus Stop inward Marwa, where an unidentified motorist reportedly fled the scene immediately after striking the victim, leaving her critically injured on the busy roadway.

According to LASTMA, its officers who were monitoring traffic within the corridor swiftly responded to the emergency by securing the victim from further harm, evacuating her from the carriageway, and alerting the Lagos State Ambulance Service (LASAMBUS) for immediate medical intervention.

The traffic management agency also implemented traffic control measures around the accident scene to prevent secondary crashes and ensure the free flow of vehicles along the expressway.

LASAMBUS officials subsequently arrived at the scene and transported the victim to the General Hospital, Odan, where she was admitted for urgent medical treatment and comprehensive evaluation.

Reacting to the incident, the General Manager of LASTMA, Mr. Olalekan Bakare-Oki, expressed concern over the increasing cases of hit-and-run accidents across the state, describing such actions as both morally unacceptable and legally punishable.

He reiterated the agency’s commitment to safeguarding lives and property through effective traffic management and rapid emergency response operations.

“Every motorist bears an inherent civic and moral obligation to uphold the sanctity of human life. Fleeing the scene of an accident after causing injury to another road user is not only an abdication of responsibility but also a grievous affront to humanity and the rule of law,” Bakare-Oki said.

The LASTMA boss also commended the seamless collaboration between LASTMA personnel and LASAMBUS officials, noting that their prompt and coordinated response played a crucial role in ensuring the victim received timely medical attention while normal traffic conditions were quickly restored along the affected route.

LASTMA urged motorists to drive responsibly, adhere strictly to traffic regulations, and promptly report road accidents and emergencies through appropriate channels to enable swift intervention by relevant authorities.

The agency reaffirmed its dedication to enhancing road safety and emergency response services across Lagos State.
