IGP Disu, Police Trust Fund, POWA Launch Skills Acquisition Programme for Spouses of Junior Police Officers
The Inspector-General of Police (IGP), IGP Olatunji Rilwan Disu, alongside the Nigeria Police Trust Fund (NPTF) and the Police Officers' Wives Association (POWA), has launched the maiden Skills Acquisition and Empowerment Programme for spouses of junior police officers as part of efforts to improve the welfare and economic stability of police families.
The programme, held at the MD Abubakar Police Barracks, Dei-Dei, Abuja, was themed "Empowering Families, Strengthening Communities: Advancing the Renewed Hope Agenda Through Skills Acquisition and Economic Empowerment."
The event was hosted by the Minister of Police Affairs, Senator Ibrahim Gaidam, and attended by the Executive Secretary of the Nigeria Police Trust Fund, Mohammed Sheidu; the National President of POWA, Chief Mrs. Olufunmilola Mutiat Disu; and beneficiary spouses of junior police officers from across the country.
Speaking at the launch, IGP Disu described the initiative as a strategic investment in the welfare and stability of police families, stressing that the effectiveness of police personnel is closely tied to the wellbeing of their households.
He commended the spouses of junior police officers for their unwavering support, which he said contributes significantly to the morale and efficiency of the Force. The IGP urged beneficiaries to make productive use of the skills, equipment and resources provided, encouraging them to build sustainable sources of income rather than view the programme as temporary assistance.
In his keynote address, the Executive Secretary of the Nigeria Police Trust Fund, Mohammed Sheidu, said the initiative underscores the Fund's commitment to improving the economic wellbeing of police families alongside its investments in infrastructure, training and operational support.
According to him, the vocational training and start-up kits distributed under the programme are aimed at helping beneficiaries establish viable businesses capable of supporting their families and contributing to community development.
Sheidu also commended President Bola Ahmed Tinubu's Renewed Hope Agenda, noting that it inspired the empowerment initiative and aligns with the administration's broader goal of promoting economic inclusion.
Also speaking, the National President of POWA, Chief Mrs. Olufunmilola Mutiat Disu, described the programme as a long-term investment in the morale, professionalism and productivity of police officers, emphasizing that strong and economically stable families are critical to effective policing.
She reaffirmed POWA's commitment to partnering with the Nigeria Police Trust Fund to sustain the initiative and appealed to government institutions, private organisations and development partners to support similar empowerment programmes for police families.
The Nigeria Police Force said it remains committed to enhancing the welfare of its personnel and their families through strategic collaborations with the Nigeria Police Trust Fund, POWA and other stakeholders to build stronger police families and improve service delivery nationwide.
