Nigeria Police Denies Issuing Third-Party Insurance, Cautions Against Misinformation

The Nigeria Police Force (NPF) has debunked viral social media claims suggesting that it is responsible for issuing Third-Party Motor Vehicle Insurance and profiting from its enforcement. The clarification comes amid allegations by some social media influencers and activists accusing the police of using the policy as a revenue-generating scheme.

In a statement issued to the National Association of Online Security News Publishers (NAOSNP), the Force Public Relations Officer, ACP Olumuyiwa Adejobi, emphasized that the police do not issue third-party insurance and are only responsible for its enforcement.

Police Only Enforcing, Not Issuing Insurance

"The attention of the police has been drawn to misinformation and misleading comments credited to some social media influencers and activists, alleging that the Nigeria Police Force is using the enforcement of third-party insurance to generate revenue," the statement read.

"The Nigeria Police Force wishes to emphasize that it does not issue third-party insurance, as has been misconstrued by some individuals. The responsibility for obtaining this mandatory insurance policy lies solely with vehicle owners through licensed insurance companies. The police are only enforcing compliance, as required by law, to enhance road safety and protect accident victims."

Warning Against Misinformation

The police also issued a strong warning to social media influencers and activists, urging them to refrain from spreading false information about insurance policies.

"The dissemination of accurate information is essential to prevent misleading the public. Misconceptions about the enforcement of third-party insurance could lead to non-compliance and potential legal repercussions for motorists," the statement added.

The enforcement of the third-party insurance policy officially commenced on February 1, 2025, with the police reaffirming their commitment to ensuring compliance while maintaining professionalism in their operations.
