Lagos to Install 3,000 E-Police and Speed Limit Cameras to Enforce Traffic Laws

The Lagos State Government has announced plans to install 3,000 electronic police (e-police) and speed limit cameras across the state to enhance traffic law enforcement and improve road safety.

The Director of the Lagos State Vehicle Inspection Service (VIS), Engr. Akin-George Fashola, disclosed this during the Lagos Transport Trends and Perspectives program on Traffic Radio 96.1 FM, a platform sponsored by the Lagos State Ministry of Transportation.

Strategic Camera Placement to Enforce Traffic Compliance

According to Engr. Fashola, speed limit cameras have already been installed at key locations, including:

• Alapere-Ogudu Road – 80km/h inbound Alausa, 60km/h inbound Iyana Oworo

• Mobolaji Bank Anthony Way – 60km/h limit

Additionally, e-police cameras designed to detect red light violations and other infractions have been placed at Allen Junction and Nurudeen Olowopopo Road in Ikeja. He urged motorists to pay attention to warning signs at these locations to avoid penalties.

₦50,000 Fine for Speed Limit Violations

Engr. Fashola emphasized that violators of speed limits will face a ₦50,000 fine. However, those who believe they were wrongly penalized can contest the fine by providing proof of compliance.

He also addressed concerns about commercial vehicles, clarifying that an average of 50 commercial buses are apprehended daily for various traffic offenses, reinforcing the government’s commitment to strict enforcement.

New Online Roadworthiness Recertification for Vehicle Owners

As part of efforts to improve service delivery, the Lagos State Government has introduced an online roadworthiness recertification system for pre-existing vehicle owners. This initiative allows motorists to renew their roadworthiness certificates online without visiting a VIS office.

Engr. Fashola also highlighted the launch of an auto verification service for used car buyers, enabling them to access the full history of a vehicle before purchase, ensuring transparency and safety in vehicle transactions.

He encouraged Lagos residents to visit the VIS website or any of the 45 VIS centers across the state for reliable information and assistance.

This latest move aligns with the Lagos State Government’s broader vision to enhance traffic management, improve road safety, and leverage technology for effective law enforcement.
