Aroyewun Hosts First Peace and Security Meeting in Igbogbo/Baiyeku, Pushes for Stronger Community Policing
The Chairman of Igbogbo/Baiyeku Local Council Development Area (LCDA), Omo’ba Hammed Olalekan Aroyewun, has pledged to strengthen collaboration between residents, security agencies, and community leaders in order to sustain peace and security within the council area.
He made the call on Wednesday, September 24, during the September edition of the LCDA Peace and Security Meeting, the first since he assumed office. The session, held at the council secretariat, brought together security operatives, traditional rulers, community development leaders, and other stakeholders.
Reports presented by security agencies at the meeting indicated that the LCDA has remained relatively peaceful in recent months. However, they stressed the importance of community involvement through intelligence sharing, urging residents to embrace the “see something, say something” principle to aid proactive policing.
Among the key issues raised during deliberations were:
- The need to ban scavengers, known as Bolla, from communities in the LCDA, with enforcement through signage.
- Proper identification for commercial motorcyclists, including ID cards and reflective jackets, to curb drug-related and other illicit activities.
- Calls for business owners to improve security around their premises.
- A charge to the Community Development Committee (CDC) to intensify public sensitisation on safety.
In his remarks, Aroyewun praised the security agencies for their swift response and proactive strategies since his administration took off. He reiterated that security remains the foundation of sustainable development and urged agencies to maintain their commitment.
The Chairman also tasked the LCDA Youth Coordinator with introducing sensitisation programmes to steer young people away from drugs and other vices. In addition, he appealed to the Divisional Police Officer (DPO) to address cases of police brutality, noting that such incidents undermine public trust in law enforcement, particularly among youths.
The meeting ended with a shared commitment among government officials, security agencies, and community leaders to step up vigilance, foster stronger synergy, and sustain peace across Igbogbo/Baiyeku LCDA.
