Ibeju-Lekki Council Boss Urges Proactive Action as Lagos Marks 2025 Domestic and Sexual Violence Awareness Month
The Executive Chairman of Ibeju-Lekki Local Government and Chairman of Conference 57, Hon. (Engr.) Abdullahi Sesan Olowa, has called for greater proactiveness in the fight against domestic and sexual violence, stressing that the scourge continues to threaten families, communities, and the wider society.
Speaking as Lagos State commemorates the 2025 Domestic and Sexual Violence Awareness Month, themed around prevention and collective responsibility, Olowa said domestic and sexual violence remain pervasive issues that cut across age, gender, race, and socioeconomic status.
He noted that the consequences extend beyond the immediate survivors to their families and society at large, with impacts on physical and mental health, economic productivity, and social stability. He also warned that children exposed to abuse are at higher risk of repeating the cycle later in life.
“As a government, we will continue to educate the citizenry and support survivors, while urging victims to speak out,” the council chairman said.
Olowa emphasized that silence and stigma fuel abuse, while awareness serves as a powerful tool for change. “By educating ourselves, supporting survivors, and advocating for systemic change, we can create a world where safety, respect, and equality prevail. Together, we can break the cycle of violence and build stronger, safer communities for all,” he added.
The Lagos State Domestic and Sexual Violence Awareness Month is an annual campaign designed to sensitize residents, mobilize stakeholders, and encourage survivors to speak up, while also reinforcing the government’s commitment to prevention, intervention, and justice.
