Six Dead, Nine Injured in Fatal Crash on Lekki–Epe Expressway

LAGOS — Tragedy struck on Sunday at Ibeju Bus Stop along the Lekki–Epe Expressway when a road traffic accident claimed six lives and left nine others injured.

The Lagos State Traffic Management Authority (LASTMA) confirmed the accident, which involved a blue Volvo FL6 truck loaded with wooden planks and a white commercial bus with registration number AKD 336 YD. Preliminary investigations linked the crash to excessive speeding and reckless driving.

According to LASTMA, the deceased included two adult males, three adult females, and one child. Nine survivors—three men and six women—were rescued and taken to the Federal Medical Centre (FMC), Epe, and Hammond Hospital for treatment. The remains of the dead were deposited at the FMC morgue for identification. Four other passengers escaped unhurt.

Rescue efforts were carried out by LASTMA officials in collaboration with the Federal Road Safety Corps (FRSC), the Nigeria Police Force (NPF), and the Lagos Neighbourhood Safety Corps (LNSC). Their swift intervention ensured prompt evacuation of victims and restoration of traffic flow at the accident scene.

General Manager of LASTMA, Mr. Olalekan Bakare-Oki, expressed condolences to the bereaved families, lamenting the recurring menace of reckless driving on Lagos roads. He reminded motorists that “speed thrills, but ultimately kills,” stressing that crashes are preventable when drivers exercise patience, discipline, and defensive driving.

Bakare-Oki further urged road users to comply strictly with traffic regulations, avoid distractions, and remain vigilant, particularly during the Ember Months when vehicular movement typically increases.

“Road crashes are not caused by supernatural forces but by human recklessness, poor judgment, and disregard for safe driving practices,” he noted.

The LASTMA boss also commended the joint efforts of emergency responders and reaffirmed the agency’s commitment to safeguarding lives and ensuring safer roads across Lagos State.
