First Lady Oluremi Tinubu Launches Nationwide Distribution of Menstrual Hygiene Packs

The First Lady of Nigeria, Senator Oluremi Tinubu, has flagged off the nationwide distribution of the Flow with Confidence Menstrual Hygiene Packs, a key intervention under the Education framework of the Renewed Hope Initiative (RHI).

Speaking at the launch in Gombe on Thursday, Mrs. Tinubu described the initiative as a vital step towards empowering young girls by promoting menstrual health, dignity, and confidence. She emphasized that no schoolgirl should be forced to miss classes because she cannot afford sanitary products.

“It is unacceptable that our girls, especially in rural communities, still face challenges during their menstrual cycle, often resorting to unsafe alternatives or missing school altogether. This trend must end,” the First Lady declared.

Under the scheme, each state and the Federal Capital Territory will receive 10,000 packs of sanitary pads through the State First Ladies and RHI Coordinators. In Gombe, the First Lady handed over 10,000 packs to the state’s First Lady for distribution to 10,000 girls in rural areas, with each beneficiary receiving a one-year supply.

Mrs. Tinubu also called on traditional rulers, religious leaders, and community leaders to ensure that the pads reach the intended beneficiaries.

The Coordinating Minister for Health and Social Welfare, Prof. Ali Pate, and Minister of Education, Dr. Tunji Alausa, both pledged government’s continued support to expand the programme to more girls nationwide.

Governor of Gombe State, Inuwa Yahaya, commended the First Lady for her interventions in health, agriculture, education, and economic empowerment, describing the initiative as timely and impactful.

Earlier, Mrs. Tinubu declared open the maiden Gombe State Health Summit, where she reiterated that health is no longer a social service but “a path to economic prosperity, social development, personal emancipation and national development.”

During her two-day visit, the Emir of Akko, HRH Alhaji Umaru Muh’d Atiku, conferred on the First Lady the traditional title of Sarauniya Yakin Kumo (Queen Warrior of Kumo), in recognition of her contributions to women and youth development.
