UNICEF Partners Conference 57 Chairmen to Boost Birth Registration in Lagos

The United Nations Children’s Fund (UNICEF) has deepened its collaboration with local governments in Lagos State to accelerate progress toward achieving the 2025 Under-1 Birth Registration targets.

Officials of UNICEF, led by Mr. Ibrahim Sesay, Chief of Child Protection, and Mr. Denis Onoise, Child Protection Specialist, paid a courtesy visit to the Executive Chairman of Ibeju-Lekki Local Government and Chairman of Conference 57, Hon. Abdullahi Sesan Olowa, on Friday.

During the meeting, the UNICEF delegation presented a detailed breakdown of birth registration targets for each Local Government Area in Lagos State. The initiative aims to enhance data-driven monitoring and increase registration coverage for children under the age of one.

Hon. Olowa, speaking on behalf of all 57 Local Government and Local Council Development Area Chairmen, commended UNICEF for its sustained partnership and reaffirmed the collective commitment of local councils to ensure that every child in Lagos is duly registered at birth.

He stressed that early birth registration is critical to safeguarding children’s rights and granting them access to healthcare, education, and other essential services.

“We remain committed to ensuring that no child is left unregistered in Lagos. Birth registration is the first step in recognizing every child’s identity and right to a better future,” Olowa said.

The engagement marks another milestone in the ongoing partnership between UNICEF and local authorities toward improving child protection and social inclusion across Lagos State.
