Dangote Fertiliser Partners with Germany’s thyssenkrupp Uhde to Build Four New Urea Granulation Plants in Nigeria

...Project to deliver 16,940 metric tons of low-emission urea daily

In a major boost to Nigeria’s industrial and agricultural sectors, Dangote Fertiliser Limited (DFL) has entered into a strategic partnership with thyssenkrupp Uhde Fertilizer Technology (UFT), a subsidiary of Germany’s thyssenkrupp Uhde, to deploy its state-of-the-art UFT® Fluid Bed Granulation Technology for four new urea granulation units in Lekki, Lagos.

Under the agreement, thyssenkrupp Uhde will provide the technology license, a comprehensive Process Design Package (PDP), and supply of proprietary equipment including granulator and scrubbers. Each of the four new units will have a nameplate capacity of 4,235 metric tons per day, giving a combined daily output of 16,940 metric tons.

When completed, the expansion will raise Dangote Fertiliser’s annual urea granule production from approximately 2.65 million tons to more than 8 million tons, making it one of the largest single-location fertilizer producers in the world.

The new facilities will be built adjacent to Dangote’s existing fertilizer complexes in Lekki, which have been operating successfully with UFT technology since 2021, producing 3,850 metric tons per day each.

According to the agreement, the upcoming plants will incorporate UFT’s energy-efficient scrubbing system, designed to minimize pressure drops and effectively control dust and ammonia emissions, ensuring compliance with stringent environmental regulations. The system will also feature Ammonia Convert Technology (ACT) — an innovation that integrates ammonium sulfate byproducts into urea granules, eliminating waste and improving both logistics and commercial efficiency.

Speaking on the partnership, Nadja Haakansson, CEO of thyssenkrupp Uhde, described the collaboration as a milestone in sustainable industrial growth.

“This partnership with Dangote Fertiliser Limited underscores our shared vision for sustainable industrial development and global food security,” she said. “By deploying our proven UFT® Fluid Bed Granulation Technology, we are setting new standards in efficiency and environmental stewardship in fertilizer production. We are proud to support DFL in building resilient and future-ready value chains.”

In his remarks, President of Dangote Group, Aliko Dangote, said the project reinforces the Group’s commitment to advancing Africa’s agricultural self-sufficiency and industrial growth.

“We are pleased to deepen our collaboration with thyssenkrupp Uhde Fertilizer Technology for the expansion of our fertilizer operations in Lekki,” Dangote said. “This initiative reflects our dedication to producing high-quality, globally competitive fertilizer while reducing environmental impact. It also strengthens Nigeria’s position as a leading fertilizer producer.”

With this partnership, Dangote Fertiliser Limited continues to demonstrate its leadership in Africa’s fertilizer industry, driving agricultural productivity and food security across the continent.

Globally, thyssenkrupp Uhde’s UFT® Fluid Bed Granulation Technology is one of the most advanced and widely adopted systems for urea granule production — currently responsible for over 70% of global output — ensuring lower emissions and higher efficiency standards in fertilizer manufacturing.
