Nigeria Unveils National Data Hub to Advance Gender-Responsive Climate Action

Nigeria has taken a major step toward integrating gender equality into climate governance with the launch of its National Data Hub for Gender and Climate Information — a pioneering platform designed to generate, harmonize, and visualize gender-disaggregated climate data across all sectors.

The initiative was unveiled on November 12, 2025, in Belém, Brazil, during the Joint Side Event on “Scaling Inclusive Climate Finance: Delivering the $1.3 Trillion Roadmap for People, Economies and Nature” at the ongoing COP30.

Speaking at the launch, the Director-General of the National Council on Climate Change (NCCC), Barr. Tenioye Majekodunmi, said the Data Hub represents a significant milestone in Nigeria’s efforts to mainstream gender considerations across climate-related policies and actions, in line with the Climate Change Act 2021 and the National Action Plan on Gender and Climate Change (2020–2025).

According to Majekodunmi, the Hub serves as a strategic tool for evidence-based policymaking, enabling transparency, accountability, and the development of interventions that reflect the lived experiences of women and girls most affected by climate change.

He noted that the platform would also strengthen Nigeria’s reporting obligations under the Enhanced Transparency Framework (ETF) and align with the Commonwealth Collaborative Network for Gender-Responsive Climate Action.

“The launch of the National Data Hub reaffirms Nigeria’s commitment to inclusive climate finance, bridging gender data gaps, and amplifying women’s leadership in climate governance,” Majekodunmi stated. “We look forward to deepening partnerships within the Commonwealth Collaborative Network to promote South-South cooperation and advance gender-just, data-driven climate solutions.”

The Data Hub is expected to play a pivotal role in fostering climate resilience, sustainable development, and equitable transformation across Nigeria and the broader global South.
