Zone 2 Police Command Marks 70 Years of Women Policing with Anti-Gender Violence Health Walk

The Zone 2 Police Command has commemorated 70 years of women’s contribution to policing in Nigeria with a special Health Walk aimed at raising awareness against gender-based violence. The three-day event, which began on Friday, November 28, will conclude on Monday, December 1, 2025.

Speaking during the celebration, Assistant Inspector-General of Police (AIG) Adegoke Fayoade praised the resilience, courage, and professionalism of women officers across the country. He urged Nigerians to unite in condemning all forms of gender-based violence, stressing the need for respect, dignity, and equal opportunities for all genders.

“We say no to gender violence. We condemn gender violence. We want gender mainstreaming—let every gender be given its rightful place in national affairs,” AIG Fayoade stated. “Women officers are gallant, supportive, hardworking, and heroic. Despite the challenges of working in a male-dominated environment, they continue to excel.”

The event also featured comments from senior female personnel who emphasized the importance of collaboration in tackling abuse and protecting vulnerable persons. They highlighted that gender-based violence remains a global menace but can be eradicated with collective determination.

“We walked today to create awareness. Individuals, organizations, and institutions must come together in one accord to say no to violence, no to rape, no to threats, and no to intimidation,” one of the speakers noted.

CSP Ayuba commended the Inspector-General of Police Kayode Egbetokun and AIG Aisha Abubakar, who pioneered the initiative. She described the anniversary as historic, acknowledging that women now enjoy more opportunities within the Nigeria Police Force to reach the peak of their careers.

The women officers reaffirmed their commitment to service and safeguarding vulnerable groups, stressing that protecting children and future generations must remain a priority. The 5-kilometer walk served as a sensitization effort to encourage the public to speak up and act decisively against all forms of gender-based abuse.
