Lagos Police Deploy Personnel, Tighten Security for Christmas, New Year Celebrations

The Lagos State Police Command has rolled out extensive security measures ahead of the Christmas and New Year celebrations, with the massive deployment of personnel across the state to ensure the safety of lives and property.

The Commissioner of Police, CP Olohundare Jimoh, said the security operation is in line with the directives of the Inspector-General of Police, IGP Olukayode Adeolu Egbetokun, and is aimed at guaranteeing a peaceful and crime-free festive season for residents and visitors.

According to the command, the deployment includes conventional police officers, tactical units, intelligence operatives, marine police, and special squads positioned strategically across Lagos. The marine police are to intensify patrols on waterways to prevent criminal infiltration, while intelligence units will monitor individuals or groups whose activities could threaten public peace.

Area Commanders, Divisional Police Officers (DPOs), and heads of tactical units have been directed to intensify patrols, ensure visibility policing, and maintain round-the-clock surveillance across the state before, during, and after the festivities. Officers have also been charged to remain professional, courteous, and firm in the discharge of their duties.

To ease traffic congestion and ensure free flow of vehicles during the festive rush, the command disclosed that over 5,000 police personnel have been deployed specifically for traffic management across major highways, inner roads, and identified traffic-prone areas.

As part of efforts to curb the surge in fatal road accidents usually associated with the festive season, CP Jimoh recently held a strategic meeting with the Executive Secretary of the Lagos State Security Trust Fund, Dr. Ayodele Ogunsan, and heads of other security and safety agencies. The meeting included representatives of the Federal Road Safety Corps (FRSC), Lagos State Traffic Management Authority (LASTMA), Lagos State Fire Service, the Federal Controller of Works, among others, to deliberate on sustainable measures to enhance road safety and public security.

The police command also announced the deployment of joint teams comprising conventional police officers, tactical squads, intelligence units, and other operatives to crack down on traffic robbers, miscreants, hoodlums, and other criminal elements seeking to exploit the festive period.

Special attention, the command noted, is being given to the security of places of worship, recreational centres, nightclubs, markets, motor parks, and other public gathering points expected to witness increased human traffic during the celebrations.
