LASTMA Condemns One-Way Driving After Fatal Accident Claims Life of Federal Firefighter in Abule-Ado

The Lagos State Traffic Management Authority (LASTMA) has reaffirmed its zero-tolerance stance on one-way driving following a tragic road accident that claimed the life of a Federal Fire Service officer along the Trade Fair–Abule-Ado axis of Lagos.

The incident occurred along the service lane of the route when a commercial motorcyclist, reportedly travelling against traffic at high speed, struck the firefighter who was attempting to cross the expressway. Witnesses said the impact caused confusion on the busy lane, forcing the driver of an oncoming Shacman truck (registration number: JJJ 919 YK), heavily loaded with sand, to lose control and run into the victim.

LASTMA officials attached to the Trade Fair corridor responded swiftly, immediately cordoning off the accident area to ensure the safety of other road users and restore order. With assistance from nearby pedestrians, officers secured the crash site and quickly alerted the Onireke Police Division. Police personnel soon arrived to open an investigation and reinforce security.

The motorcyclist, who triggered the chain of events, fled the scene with his motorcycle before he could be apprehended. The truck driver also abandoned the vehicle and escaped after the incident. The deceased firefighter was evacuated by his colleagues from the Federal Fire Service in an official ambulance dispatched from the Trade Fair complex.

Following proper scene management, LASTMA handed over the impounded truck to designated security agencies for further investigation and legal action.

Reacting to the incident, LASTMA General Manager, Mr. Olalekan Bakare-Oki, expressed deep sympathy to the family of the deceased, praying for divine comfort during their time of grief. He assured them of the agency’s support as they navigate the difficult loss.

Bakare-Oki condemned the recurring practice of driving against traffic in Lagos, describing it as a reckless behaviour that continues to inflict avoidable fatalities and emotional trauma on innocent citizens. He urged motorists and commercial motorcyclists to obey directional signs, adhere to speed regulations, and respect traffic laws for the preservation of lives.

LASTMA reiterated its commitment to enforcing regulations, promoting safe road use, and fostering a disciplined motoring culture across Lagos State.
