Osiyemi Pledges Expansion of Lagos Water Transport as LAGFERRY Unveils 2026 Growth Plans

The Lagos State Commissioner for Transportation, Mr. Oluwaseun Osiyemi, has reaffirmed the state government’s commitment to expanding water transportation as a sustainable alternative to road travel, with a focus on the Omi-Eko Project.

The Commissioner made this known on Friday during a courtesy and strategic visit to the Lagos State Ferry Services (LAGFERRY), as part of his ongoing engagements with agencies under the Ministry of Transportation.

Earlier in the week, Mr. Osiyemi had visited other key transport agencies, including the Lagos Metropolitan Area Transport Authority (LAMATA), Motor Vehicle Administration Agency (MVAA), Lagos State Waterways Authority (LASWA) and Lagos Bus Services Limited (LBSL), where he held discussions with management teams on strategic priorities and plans for 2026.

At LAGFERRY, the Commissioner was received by the Managing Director, Hon. Abdoubaq Ladi Balogun, who presented an overview of the agency’s achievements in 2025, alongside its operational roadmap and growth targets for the 2026 fiscal year.

Commending LAGFERRY for the significant improvements recorded on Lagos waterways, Mr. Osiyemi stressed the importance of fully harnessing the state’s water transport potential to decongest roads and improve commuter mobility.

He disclosed that the Omi-Eko Project would play a transformative role in repositioning water transportation in Lagos through the construction of new jetties, dredging of additional routes and the deployment of 75 electric ferries across strategic waterways.

The Commissioner also called for enhanced synergy among agencies under the Ministry, urging them to align operations with a shared vision, clear strategy and strong inter-agency collaboration to ensure the successful delivery of the Ministry’s objectives for 2026.

The visit underscores the Lagos State Government’s broader agenda to develop an integrated, efficient and environmentally sustainable transport system for the state.
