2027 Elections: Lagos APC Clears Candidates for Crucial LG Congress Across 20 Councils

As momentum builds ahead of the 2027 general elections, the All Progressive Congress (APC) in Lagos State has cleared 540 candidates to contest in its Local Government Area (LGA) Congress scheduled for Saturday across the state’s 20 constitutionally recognized councils.

The Chairman of the Lagos State Screening Committee, Barrister Nungji Salama, announced the development during a press conference held at the party’s state secretariat on Friday, describing the exercise as a critical foundation for strengthening party structures ahead of future electoral contests.

Salama, who leads the 16-member screening committee constituted by the party’s national leadership, assured members and stakeholders of a transparent and credible process. He emphasized t1hat the committee is committed to fairness and internal democracy, pledging that all aspirants would be given equal opportunity within the framework of the party’s constitution and guidelines.

According to him, 27 executive positions are being contested in each of the 20 local government areas, resulting in a total of 540 screened candidates eligible to participate in the congress.

“We have successfully screened 27 excos per local government, making 540 candidates across the 20 LGAs. The exercise will be conducted in a peaceful and orderly manner. We appeal to all party members to embrace unity and support the process for the collective progress of the party,” Salama stated.

He further called on party faithful who were not directly involved in the screening exercise to cooperate with the committee and contribute to the success of the congress, stressing that internal cohesion remains vital as the 2027 political cycle approaches.

Earlier in his remarks, Lagos State APC Chairman, Pastor Cornelius Ojelabi, underscored the importance of strict adherence to the Electoral Act in conducting the congress.

Ojelabi noted that the party deliberately adopted the provisions of the Electoral Act as a guiding framework to ensure legitimacy and compliance.

“The content of the Electoral Act is very critical to the party. That is why we have used it as a roadmap for this congress. This is not business as usual. The congress offers us the opportunity to reposition and strengthen our structures at the grassroots,” he said.

He urged delegates and aspirants to approach the exercise with a sense of responsibility and readiness, emphasizing that effective leadership at the local government level is essential for sustaining the party’s progressive agenda in Lagos State.

The screening committee comprises party executives drawn from various states, including Barr. S.N. Salama, Prof. Netawe Jeneduwa, Hon. Mankinde, Joseph Tanwa, and Dr. Ibrahim Hassan, among others.

The Lagos APC had earlier conducted its ward congresses during the week, with the LGA congress serving as the next phase in consolidating the party’s grassroots leadership architecture ahead of the 2027 elections.
