Border Security Boost: Ogun Customs Intensify War Against Narcotics Trafficking 

Barely six weeks after assuming office as Acting Customs Area Controller of Ogun I Command, Deputy Comptroller Olukayode Oladapo Afeni has overseen a sweeping enforcement drive that has significantly altered the security landscape along the Idiroko border corridor.

Under the umbrella of the Nigeria Customs Service (NCS), Ogun I Command has recorded major seizures targeting narcotics, foreign rice, and other contraband, reinforcing its role as a frontline defender of Nigeria’s economic and national security interests.

4,260 Parcels of Cannabis Intercepted

In January alone, the Command intercepted over 4,260 parcels of cannabis sativa and indica across key smuggling routes, particularly around Idiroko, Imeko, and Ipokia axes. The figure surpasses the 2,700 bags of foreign parboiled rice seized within the same period, reflecting a shift in enforcement focus from food smuggling to narcotics trafficking.

Afeni explained that narcotics pose a deeper societal threat, linking drug trafficking to rising criminality, youth vulnerability, and insecurity. According to him, curbing drug inflow remains a strategic priority for the Command.

Smuggling Networks Disrupted

Findings indicate that many smuggling operations are coordinated from neighboring Benin Republic, with Nigeria serving as a destination market for narcotics, arms, used vehicles, foreign rice, and second-hand clothing.

Since Afeni’s deployment, intelligence-driven operations and enhanced patrols have reportedly disrupted these networks, forcing several smugglers to retreat beyond Ogun I Command’s operational jurisdiction.

Heightened Vigilance Amid Security Concerns

The intensified enforcement comes amid growing concerns about regional instability and Nigeria’s electoral cycle. Afeni has reaffirmed the Command’s resolve to prevent arms and ammunition from entering the country through Ogun’s porous borders.

“We are more vigilant to prevent arms and narcotics smuggling into the country,” he stated, emphasizing the dual responsibility of Customs in trade facilitation and national security.

Professionalism and Community Engagement

Despite the aggressive enforcement posture, Afeni has maintained that professionalism and courtesy remain central to operations. Officers have been reminded to uphold discipline while ensuring compliance with Customs regulations.

The Controller has also pledged stronger engagement with border communities and traditional institutions to discourage complicity in smuggling activities. By expanding corporate social responsibility initiatives, the Command aims to build trust and reduce local participation in illicit trade.

Strengthening the Frontline

Observers within the security sector note that Ogun I Command’s recent performance underscores the broader reform agenda of the NCS under the Comptroller-General. The Command’s operations have positioned it as a critical buffer against economic sabotage and cross-border criminality.

While challenges persist, particularly given the geography of Ogun’s border communities and the adaptability of smuggling syndicates, the Command insists there will be no compromise in enforcement standards.

With over 4,000 parcels of cannabis already seized within weeks, Ogun I Command’s renewed momentum signals a tougher stance against illicit trade and a reinforced commitment to safeguarding Nigeria’s borders.
