LASG Begins Free Eye-Care Programme for Police Officers, Targets 1,000 Personnel

The Lagos State Government has extended its health and safety intervention programme to officers of the Nigeria Police Force in the state, commencing with the distribution of free prescription glasses and medical checks to 1,000 personnel.

The initiative, which complements the efforts of the Inspector-General of Police, , and the Lagos State Commissioner of Police, , is part of the broader Lagos State Care programme earlier introduced for commercial drivers across the state.

Speaking at the event, the Senior Special Assistant to the Governor on Transportation, Comrade Hassan Adekoya, said the intervention was designed to appreciate the sacrifices of police officers and enhance their health and operational efficiency.

He noted that while Governor had earlier approved a comprehensive health package for 10,000 drivers in Lagos, the government deemed it necessary to extend similar benefits to security personnel.

“Without the police, we are not safe. They are the backbone of our security architecture. This is a way of complementing what the IGP and the Commissioner of Police in Lagos have been doing. We are starting with 1,000 officers, and this is just the beginning,” Adekoya said.

According to him, beneficiaries underwent vision screening and other vital medical checks during the exercise, with prescription glasses provided free of charge where necessary.

One of the beneficiaries, Inspector Adewale Bello, expressed gratitude to the state government and police authorities for the initiative. He disclosed that he had been struggling with reading small prints but had not yet made plans to get corrective glasses.

“This is my first time using glasses. When I was tested, I realised I had difficulty reading tiny words. I had planned to get glasses, but today I received them free of charge. I can now read clearly,” he said.

He thanked the Inspector-General of Police, the Lagos State Commissioner of Police, and Governor Sanwo-Olu for what he described as a thoughtful and impactful intervention.

Another beneficiary, Supo Iyabo Obanasa of the Lagos State Police Command, said she was informed about the free eye-care initiative on February 13, 2026, and promptly proceeded to the Police Headquarters in Ikeja to participate.

“As of yesterday, I was having difficulty reading some words and was already planning to get glasses. Fortunately, I was informed about the free glasses initiative at the Police Headquarters, Ikeja. I received my glasses today, and I am very happy. I can now read clearly as expected,” she said.

She also appreciated the Inspector-General of Police, the Commissioner of Police in Lagos, and the Lagos State Government for the gesture, describing it as a special gift to officers.

The Lagos State Care initiative forms part of the state government’s broader commitment to the health, safety, and welfare of critical service providers, including transport operators and security personnel, whose roles are considered vital to public safety and socio-economic stability.
