Oyo Anti-Land Grabbing Agency Warns: No One Is Above the Law

The Oyo State Real Properties Protection Law Agency has cautioned residents against taking the law into their own hands in land disputes, stressing that using force to reclaim property is criminal and punishable under the law.

Chairman of the agency, Hon. Justice Olajumoke Aiki (Rtd.), issued the warning during a radio programme in Ibadan, highlighting the agency’s activities since its inception two years ago. She emphasized that all individuals, regardless of status, are subject to the law in the ongoing fight against land grabbing across the state.

“His Excellency Governor has made it clear that no one is untouchable. Cases involving suspected land grabbers are already before the courts. Impunity will not be tolerated,” Justice Aiki said.

She urged property owners to report any harassment or illegal encroachment, particularly by hoodlums known as “Omo Onile,” assuring that the agency will intervene promptly and impartially. The agency is also exploring recruitment of additional investigation officers and acquiring motorcycles to improve rapid response to incidents in hard-to-reach areas.

Since its establishment, the agency has collected nearly 4,000 complaint forms, with about 3,000 petitions formally submitted. Of these, roughly 1,000 were resolved without litigation, while others were referred to Alternative Dispute Resolution mechanisms or the courts. Currently, 220 cases are being prosecuted, with one conviction secured, 28 cases concluded, and 1,320 petitions still under investigation.

Justice Aiki stressed that all services provided by the agency, from complaint filing to prosecution, are free of charge, in line with Governor Makinde’s directive.
