Six Injured in Third Mainland Bridge Accident as LASTMA Conducts Emergency Rescue

Lagos, Feb. 2, 2026 — No fewer than six commuters sustained injuries on Monday following a road traffic accident involving a commercial Volkswagen bus on the Third Mainland Bridge, Adekunle axis, inward Iyana-Oworonsoki, Lagos.

The Lagos State Traffic Management Authority (LASTMA) said preliminary investigations revealed that the fully loaded bus, which was conveying passengers alongside household items, suffered a sudden brake failure while in motion. The mechanical fault reportedly caused the driver to lose control, leading to the vehicle overturning on the bridge.

According to the agency, the accident left two adult males and four adult females with varying degrees of injuries, while one of the victims sustained a serious eye injury.

LASTMA officials on routine patrol at the corridor were said to have responded swiftly, successfully rescuing and extricating all the injured passengers from the wreckage.

Four of the victims were immediately taken to a nearby hospital by Good Samaritans for urgent medical attention, while operatives of the Nigeria Police Force, Adekunle Division, assisted in conveying a male victim with multiple fractures to a medical facility. Another injured passenger received on-the-spot treatment from officials of the Lagos State Ambulance Service (LASAMBUS).

To prevent a secondary accident and ease traffic congestion, LASTMA officials promptly evacuated the accident vehicle from the roadway, restoring free flow of traffic on the bridge.

Reacting to the incident, the Special Adviser to the Governor on Transportation, Hon. Sola Giwa, expressed sympathy to the injured passengers and their families, wishing them a speedy recovery.

He cautioned commercial drivers against overloading and urged motorists to prioritise regular vehicle maintenance, particularly routine checks on braking systems, before embarking on any journey within or outside Lagos State.

Hon. Giwa reaffirmed the Lagos State Government’s commitment to safeguarding lives and property on its roads, stressing that negligence and failure to maintain vehicles would continue to attract strict sanctions.
