APC Slams ADC Over Tinubu’s “Democracy Is a Game” Comment, Calls Criticism Misinterpretation

The All Progressives Congress (APC) in Lagos State has dismissed criticism from the African Democratic Congress (ADC) over a recent remark by President Bola Ahmed Tinubu describing democracy as “a game,” insisting that the comment was a metaphor highlighting the competitive nature of democratic politics.

The Lagos State chapter of the APC has accused the ADC of deliberately misinterpreting the President’s statement, stressing that democracy across the world involves rules, strategy, participation and healthy political competition.

In a statement issued on Saturday, the Lagos APC Spokesman, Hon. Seye Oladejo, said the remark by Tinubu should be understood within the context of political contestation and the need for parties to organize and compete within established democratic frameworks.

According to him, rather than engage in constructive political dialogue, the ADC has chosen to sensationalise the President’s comment in an attempt to gain attention.

Oladejo also criticised what he described as the opposition party’s reliance on “theatrics” to gain public relevance, alleging that some of its leaders stage social media activities aimed at portraying themselves as being connected to ordinary Nigerians.

He maintained that such actions may attract temporary online attention but cannot replace credible leadership, grassroots engagement and strong political organisation.

The APC spokesman further defended Tinubu’s democratic credentials, describing the President as one of the prominent figures in Nigeria’s democratic struggle and a long-standing advocate of political pluralism and institutional development.

“It is ironic that a party with little electoral relevance would attempt to lecture a statesman whose political journey has significantly shaped Nigeria’s democratic evolution,” Oladejo said.

He advised the ADC to focus on building viable political structures and presenting credible alternatives to Nigerians rather than “manufacturing controversies.”

Oladejo reaffirmed that the APC remains committed to democratic competition, the rule of law and respect for the will of the electorate under the leadership of President Tinubu.

The statement comes amid ongoing political reactions to the President’s recent remark, which has sparked debate among opposition parties and political observers.
