Transformative Leadership: CSP Tayo Akerele Drives Innovation and Discipline at Lagos State Taskforce
Since assuming office on June 26, 2024, as Chairman of the Lagos State Environmental and Special Offences Unit, popularly known as the Lagos State Taskforce, CSP Tayo Akerele has introduced a blend of strategic leadership, innovation, and professionalism aimed at strengthening law enforcement operations and restoring public confidence in the agency.
The appointment of Akerele, then a Chief Superintendent of Police, marked the beginning of a new phase for the agency responsible for enforcing environmental and traffic regulations across Lagos.
Under his leadership, the Taskforce has adopted a unique approach that combines strategic planning, collaborative partnerships, and technological advancement while strictly adhering to the laws establishing the agency. Observers say the reforms have helped reposition the unit for improved operational effectiveness.
Akerele is widely regarded for his strong commitment to discipline, integrity, professionalism, and efficiency. His experience, shaped by participation in several conferences and seminars both locally and internationally, has exposed him to modern policing techniques and enforcement strategies.
A key aspect of his leadership has been regular lectures and sensitization programmes for officers, emphasizing the importance of professionalism and restraint during enforcement operations. He has consistently warned personnel against the excessive use of force and any conduct that could undermine public trust or violate the law.

A few months after assuming office, Akerele also inaugurated a reform team tasked with implementing structural changes within the agency. The initiative focused on redesigning operational processes to improve transparency, accountability, and efficiency.
