Man Arrested in Lagos for Allegedly Selling Sister’s One-Month-Old Baby for N2 Million

The Nigeria Police Force in Lagos has arrested a 30-year-old man for allegedly selling his sister’s one-month-old baby for N2 million, claiming he carried out the act to raise money for their mother’s burial.

The suspect, a resident of Igbogbo in the Ikorodu area of Lagos State, was apprehended after the baby’s mother reported the incident to the police.

According to the police, the suspect allegedly sold the infant to a woman he met on Facebook.

The Commissioner of Police Olohundare Jimoh has ordered that the case be transferred to the State Criminal Investigation Department (SCID), Panti, for further investigation.

Speaking on Friday in Lagos, the suspect reportedly admitted to the act, blaming financial hardship for his decision.

“Hardship pushed me to commit the act. My sister agreed to the idea,” he said.

He explained that he connected with a woman seeking to adopt a child through Facebook and later arranged to meet her representative at Mile 2.

“I went there with my sister. A man sent by the buyer collected the baby, and the woman transferred N2 million to my bank account,” the suspect stated.

He added that he gave his sister N500,000 from the money while using the remaining funds to organise their mother’s burial.

However, the suspect claimed that after the burial, his sister demanded the return of the baby and denied consenting to the sale, alleging that he had used charms to manipulate her.

“She later reported me to the police, which led to my arrest,” he said.

The suspect also told investigators that he does not know the buyer personally and has no information about her address, adding that her phone number has since become unreachable.

Confirming the development, the Deputy Commissioner of Police in charge of the SCID, Dayo Akinbisehin, said investigations were ongoing and that the suspect would be charged to court upon completion of the probe.

Akinbisehin reiterated that CP Jimoh remains committed to dismantling child trafficking networks and other criminal activities across Lagos.

He also urged members of the public to remain vigilant and continue providing credible and timely information to security agencies to aid the fight against crime in the state.
