Easter: LASTMA Deploys Additional Personnel, Warns Against Drunk Driving and Reckless Speeding in Lagos
As Lagos braces for increased travel activity during the Easter festivities, the Lagos State Traffic Management Authority (LASTMA) has announced the deployment of additional personnel and critical logistics across the state, alongside a strong advisory urging motorists to avoid unsafe driving practices.
In a statement issued by the General Manager of LASTMA, Olalekan Bakare-Oki, road users were cautioned against driving under the influence of alcohol, excessive speeding, dangerous overtaking, and other forms of reckless behaviour that could lead to avoidable accidents and loss of lives.
Bakare-Oki noted that while the Easter period is marked by celebrations, it also places significant pressure on the state’s transportation network. He stressed that no social engagement justifies endangering lives or property through irresponsible driving.
To manage the anticipated surge in vehicular movement, LASTMA has strategically deployed officers to major highways, traffic intersections, transport hubs, central business districts, recreational centres, and religious venues across Lagos. The officers have been mandated to intensify traffic monitoring, enforce compliance, and respond swiftly to any disruptions.
The agency has also reinforced its operational capacity with the deployment of high- and medium-capacity tow trucks, alongside essential traffic management equipment such as cones and safety barriers. These resources, Bakare-Oki said, are aimed at ensuring rapid response to breakdowns and incidents, thereby minimizing traffic congestion.
He reaffirmed LASTMA’s commitment to safeguarding lives and maintaining seamless traffic flow throughout the festive period, noting that all operational teams are fully mobilised to handle increased road activity.
The General Manager further appealed to motorists to exhibit patience, discipline, and adherence to traffic regulations, emphasizing that road safety is a shared responsibility.
Bakare-Oki also called on commercial drivers, transport unions, fleet operators, and logistics companies to intensify awareness campaigns among their members, particularly on the dangers of overloading, speeding, and substance abuse while driving.
While extending Easter greetings to residents, LASTMA urged the public to promptly report traffic violations, obstructions, or emergencies to enable swift intervention by its officials.
